Surgical Pathology Laboratory

The surgical pathology laboratory provides complete gross and microscopic examinations for all specimens and tissues submitted by the physicians of University Hospital and Clinics. Professional consultation services by staff pathologists are available to outside organizations. Of particular note is the frozen section/intra-operative consultation service in which a staff pathologist provides a diagnosis to the surgeon within 20 minutes of specimen arrival to the laboratory. We also use Mikroscan technology to allow remote evaluation of intra-operative consultations.

The histology division provides services for embedding tissue in paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining permanent sections for review by pathologists as well as providing an extensive menu of special stains to aid in diagnosis. Furthermore, specialized services are provided for telepathology, hematopathology, and neuropathology.

In addition, we have a Philips digital pathology slide scanner which is utilized for interesting case conferences, tumor boards, and presentations at national and international conferences.
